Learning a new musical instrument always involves some degree of adaptation. Even experienced musicians can feel like beginners again when they encounter an instrument with a different physical setup, musical language, and way of producing sound.
The handpan is particularly interesting in this regard. Its apparently simple layout can make it look intuitive, but musicians coming from other instruments may discover that some of their established habits do not translate as naturally as expected.
From posture and technique to tuning, maintenance, and even the way you think about musical possibilities, here are a few aspects of the handpan that may feel confusing, surprising, or simply different when you are transitioning from another instrument.
Your Posture May Need More Attention Than You Expect
One of the first things that can catch musicians off guard is how easy it is to become careless about posture when playing the handpan.
With many traditional instruments, the physical relationship between the musician and the instrument naturally encourages a more structured posture. A pianist sits facing a keyboard, a guitarist holds the instrument in a relatively fixed position, and many wind instruments require specific body alignment for proper technique and breathing.
The handpan is different. Because it can be placed on the player's lap or on a stand, and because the notes can be accessed from many different angles, it is surprisingly easy to gradually lean toward the instrument, twist the torso, or adopt an asymmetrical position without noticing.
This freedom is one of the appealing aspects of the handpan, but it can also become a problem. During a long playing session, a small postural deviation can become habitual, potentially creating unnecessary tension and discomfort.
Musicians transitioning to handpan should therefore pay attention not only to how they strike the notes, but also to how they position their entire body around the instrument. A comfortable position should allow the shoulders, arms, wrists, and hands to move freely without forcing the torso into an awkward angle.
In other words, the handpan gives you a lot of freedom, but that freedom also means you have to take more responsibility for your own posture.
Your Previous Percussion Technique May Not Transfer Directly
Another common surprise is that experience with another instrument does not necessarily translate into immediate technical fluency on the handpan.
This can be particularly noticeable for percussionists coming from instruments such as djembe, conga, or other hand drums. Although the handpan is also played with the hands and produces sound through impact, its playing technique is fundamentally different.
The shape of the instrument, the way its notes respond, the importance of precise contact points, and the relationship between the fundamental tone and harmonics all require a different type of touch.
A percussionist may therefore arrive with excellent rhythmic skills and a well-developed sense of dynamics, but still need time to adjust the mechanics of producing a clean, controlled handpan sound.
Previous experience is certainly valuable, because it can provide a strong foundation in rhythm, timing, coordination, and dynamics, but it should not be assumed that an established technique can simply be transferred from one instrument to another.
Sometimes, part of the transition involves temporarily putting familiar habits aside and allowing the hands to discover a new vocabulary.
The Combination of Percussion and Melody Can Be Overwhelming
Depending on your musical background, you may never have played an instrument that combines such strong percussive and melodic characteristics.
That combination is one of the things that makes the handpan so fascinating. A single strike can simultaneously function as a rhythmic gesture and produce a clearly defined musical note, while the resonance of the instrument adds another layer to the sound.
For musicians coming from purely rhythmic instruments, suddenly having access to melody and harmony can feel like entering an entirely new musical territory.
But the opposite can also happen.
A pianist, for example, may be completely comfortable with melody, chords, and harmonic relationships, yet find the percussive aspect of the handpan unfamiliar. Knowing which notes belong together is one thing; understanding how the timing, intensity, contact point, and type of strike affect the character of those notes is something else.
Even musicians coming from instruments such as the marimba or xylophone, which already provide access to clearly defined pitches, may experience some degree of estrangement. On those instruments, the physical act of producing the note is quite different from the highly tactile, percussive interaction with a handpan.
The result can be wonderfully liberating - but also a little overwhelming at first.
The handpan offers rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, and timbral possibilities simultaneously. Part of the learning process is simply discovering how these elements can coexist without trying to use all of them at once.
The Modal Nature of the Handpan Can Change How You Think About Music
Another major adjustment for musicians coming from instruments such as piano, guitar, or other chromatic instruments is the modal nature of the handpan.
Most handpans are built around a specific scale or mode. This means that, unlike a piano or guitar, the instrument does not give the player access to all twelve chromatic notes.
For a musician accustomed to having every note available, this can initially feel restrictive.
On the other hand, this limitation can also become one of the handpan's greatest strengths.
Because the notes are selected to work together within a particular scale, it is possible to explore musical ideas without constantly worrying about whether a note will clash harmonically. The instrument's limitations can therefore become a framework for creativity rather than simply a restriction.
Still, musicians accustomed to chromatic instruments need to adjust their expectations. If you want to play a note that is not part of your handpan's scale, you cannot simply reach for another key or fret.
You need another instrument.
This can lead to an entirely different way of building a setup. Players who want greater harmonic or melodic flexibility may eventually add a second (or a third…) handpan with a complementary scale.
At that point, there is another adjustment to make: learning how to position multiple instruments and how to move between them naturally. The physical layout of your set becomes part of your playing technique.
The Instrument Itself Cannot Be Adjusted by the Player
This is perhaps one of the biggest differences for musicians coming from instruments that require regular adjustment and maintenance.
A guitarist or bassist can replace strings, adjust the instrument's setup, and make certain changes to its action or intonation. A drummer can replace or tune drumheads. Players of wind instruments can make adjustments to certain components or compensate for changes through their technique.
A handpan is different.
The tuning and tonal structure of a handpan are extremely delicate. If a note becomes unstable, the instrument develops a problem, or its tuning needs to be corrected, this is not something the player should attempt to fix independently.
Re-tuning or making structural changes to a handpan should be performed by a handpan maker.
This makes proper care particularly important. Cleaning the instrument correctly, protecting it from inappropriate environmental conditions, handling it carefully, and paying attention to changes in its sound are all part of being a handpan owner.
For musicians accustomed to being directly involved in maintaining and adjusting their instruments, this can require a significant change in mindset: with a handpan, prevention and careful handling are often much more important than attempting to fix a problem yourself.
Microphone Placement Can Be Surprisingly Tricky
The handpan can also present an unexpected challenge when it is time to amplify or record it.
Although the instrument may sound beautiful and balanced when played acoustically, capturing that sound accurately with microphones is not always straightforward.
The microphone needs to capture the complex combination of fundamental tones, harmonics, resonance, and percussive attacks without exaggerating unwanted sounds.
Depending on the microphone, its position, the room, and the player's technique, a recording can pick up finger impacts, excessive attack, clicking or popping sounds, unwanted resonances, or other noises that may not be particularly noticeable when listening to the instrument from the player's position.
This is why finding a good setup often requires experimentation.
Even experienced stage musicians may need to test different microphones, positions, distances, and sound systems before finding an arrangement that works well for a particular handpan.
For someone coming from another instrument, it can therefore be surprising to discover that simply placing a microphone in front of the instrument does not necessarily reproduce the sound they hear in the room.
The handpan rewards careful experimentation when it comes to amplification and recording.
Every Maker Can Give the Same Scale a Different Voice
Another fascinating aspect of the handpan world is how much personality can exist between instruments made by different makers.
There are certain conventions in handpan construction, particularly regarding the general organization and placement of notes. However, makers may use different materials, manufacturing processes, construction techniques, and approaches to voicing their instruments.
As a result, two handpans with exactly the same scale can sound remarkably different.
This is not entirely unique to handpans. Musicians familiar with guitars, violins, drums, or other instruments already know that different manufacturers can give their instruments distinct characteristics and recognizable "voices."
However, the differences between handpans can be particularly striking.
This is something worth considering carefully when choosing an instrument. The name of the scale alone tells you only part of the story. The maker, the specific instrument, its tonal character, sustain, attack, and overall voice are equally important.
For a musician transitioning from another instrument, this can be an important change in perspective: instead of simply choosing an instrument because it offers the notes you want, you also need to discover which voice speaks to you.
The Handpan Community Can Be Part of the Learning Experience
There is also a less technical aspect of transitioning to handpan that can be surprisingly enjoyable: discovering the community surrounding the instrument.
Handpan gatherings and events take place in different parts of the world, bringing together beginners and experienced players, amateurs and professionals, musicians from different backgrounds, makers, enthusiasts, and people who simply enjoy the instrument.
These events are often opportunities not only to listen to and play handpans, but also to exchange experiences, learn from other players, discover different instruments and playing approaches, and develop friendships with people who share an interest in the instrument.
For musicians coming from other musical communities, this can be a particularly pleasant surprise.
The handpan world has developed a strong culture of sharing, experimentation, and collective learning. You may arrive simply wanting to improve your playing and leave with new musical ideas, new connections, and a completely different perspective on the instrument.
Give Yourself Time to Unlearn and Rediscover
Transitioning from another instrument to handpan is not necessarily about starting from zero.
Your previous experience still matters. Your sense of rhythm, musicality, coordination, listening skills, understanding of dynamics, harmonic knowledge, and experience performing or improvising can all become valuable assets.
But the handpan may ask you to reorganize some of those skills.
You may need to rethink your posture, develop a different type of touch, become comfortable with the combination of percussion and melody, adapt to a modal instrument, and accept that some aspects of maintenance and amplification work differently from what you are accustomed to.
That process can be challenging, but it is also part of what makes learning the handpan so rewarding.
Rather than trying to make the handpan behave like the instrument you already know, give yourself permission to discover what makes it different.
Sometimes, the most interesting part of learning a new instrument is not figuring out how to transfer everything you already know, but discovering what you can do when you approach music from an entirely new perspective.
